For sound tech newbies who can only wonder what life is like in the real world of sound engineering and show production, “The Art of the Soundcheck” by M. Erik Matlock will set your career to the appropriate levels.
In his often amusing, entertaining and educational writings, readers will find the sound advice needed to lay a strong foundation in the audio production business. In fact, these stories should be mandatory reading for anybody preparing for a career in production work.
Matlock, who is a veteran of church, studio, stage, touring, theater, concert, corporate and installation sound, shares his vast wealth of wisdom earned over the course of his 20 years in audio production.
Read about all those pitfalls you may have never seen coming, while gaining the much needed business knowledge that will keep you running financially successful shows for a long time to come.
Over his 20-plus years in the business, Matlock has built several recording studios. He has also designed and installed about 100 sound systems for churches, schools and businesses. He travelled with the late Chuck Colson’s Prison Fellowship for almost five years setting up and running concerts for between 10 to 1,000 inmates in some 350 different prisons nationwide. In addition, Matlock also travelled almost seven years around the country with Audio Visual Services in Macon, working as a hired-gun sound tech for hundreds of shows, concerts, fundraisers, political rallies, corporate events and RV shows.
For 15 years, he served as lead audio tech for Harvest Cathedral Church in Macon, GA. Four of those were as staff Media Director. He has also worked as an independent contractor, in the sale, design, installation and service of sound systems.
